With a bit of diligence, any student should be able to find a reasonably cheap student loan, even if they have bad credit. Although students might not be able to qualify for many private student loans if they have bad credit, they should be able to get some federal student loans. These student loan programs that are sponsored by the government do not look at the applicant’s credit rating, because so many students enter college straight out of high school. Since many student loan applicants have no credit history, it doesn’t make sense for credit history to figure into the qualification process for a federal student loan.

Probably the most popular federal student loan is the Stafford student loan, which can either be subsidized or unsubsidized. A subsidized Stafford student loan is based entirely on the financial need of the student, and the government pays the interest on the loan while the student is still in school. A student must reapply for this student loan each year, and qualification may change as the student’s financial need changes. An unsubsidized Stafford student loan should be available to anyone regardless of need or credit history, but this loan builds interest while the student is till in school. Both of these student loans don’t have to be repaid until after graduation.
The Perkins student loan is another federal student loan that doesn’t require good credit. This type of student loan, however, is only available to parents with children attending college. The Perkins federal student loan has a limit of $4,000 per year for five years of college.
The federal student loan options should be the first resources exhausted, as they have the best student loan rate. If these options are unavailable, or if they have already been exhausted, the first private student loan students should apply for is an OSL student loan. The student loan rate may be higher on these loans, but they are generally the cheapest private student loan available.
The PLUS student loan option is another resource for students with bad credit. This is another student loan that is available for parents of children attending college. This is a good option for students who have bead credit, but who have parents with good credit. The student loan rate on a PLUS loan is based on the credit rating of the parents, not the student.
There are other private student loan options available, as well as student loan options based on specific majors and statewide or countywide options. Students should shop around for the best loan options available to them. Every person that wants to attend college should find a bad credit student loan option that they can qualify for.
Bad Credit Cannot Stop You From Getting Student Loans.
